Japanese Immersion Program

St Anthony’s Catholic College is proud to offer North Queensland’s only Primary Japanese Immersion Program, established in 2020 and expanding into Secondary with Year 7 in 2026. Our unique program enables students to learn the Australian Curriculum through both English and Japanese, with subjects such as Science, Mathematics, HASS and Digital Technologies taught in Japanese drawing from the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) methodology. This approach integrates academic content with authentic language use, creating a rich, meaningful bilingual learning environment.

Why Choose Immersion?

Immersion education offers a range of academic and cognitive benefits. Research shows that students in immersion programs outperform their monolingual peers in areas such as problem solving, cognitive flexibility, and metalinguistic awareness (Genesee, 2004; Turnbull, Hart & Lapkin, 2003). Immersion also fosters long-term advantages in language acquisition, intercultural understanding, and future pathways in global citizenship and employability.

At St Anthony’s Catholic College, our immersion students develop:

  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Independent learning and initiative
  • Intercultural competence and global awareness
  • Teamwork and communication skills
  • Resilience and adaptability
  • Digital literacy

Our program has grown each year, reflecting strong community interest and demand. In 2025, Year 1 enrolments reached capacity, and a waitlist was established. This growth reflects the success and impact of the program on students’ engagement and learning.

As we prepare for the launch of our secondary immersion stream in 2026, we are excited to offer families the opportunity to be part of the only whole-school Japanese Immersion Program in Queensland.
