Career Development


The Careers Office at St Anthony’s Catholic College is staffed with a qualified Career Development Practitioner, who is a member of the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA) and the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).  Membership in these professional associations ensures that Professional Standards are met and a quality service is delivered.

Career development at St Anthony’s provides students with a tailored careers program which educates students about the various opportunities available during the secondary years of schooling.  A multifaceted approach to career development ensures that students in Year 7 – 12 have access to career services, and creates a climate within the College community where students are encouraged and supported in career decision-making, whilst equipping them with the necessary skills to manage their own life-long career journey. St Anthony’s has built strong educational and industry partnerships which allows the College to utilise services from external providers such as James Cook University, Central Queensland University, Registered Training Organisations and a range of local employers.

The Career Counselling Services provides many resources and activities to help students with their career development.  These include:

  • Individualised career counselling appointments for the entire Year 12 cohort;
  • Advice on subject selection, Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) preferences and other state and overseas university applications;
  • Careers' section in the weekly newsletter containing information on topics helpful for career exploration, decision-making and planning;
  • Career Assessments including Career Compass for Year 9 and Career Voyage for Year 10;
  • Students are involved in Career Expos at various times during the senior phase of learning e.g. Townsville Careers Expo, University Experience Days, Skills for the Future NQ and the Australian Defence Force Expos;
  • Various guests are invited to the College to speak with students about jobs, courses, gap year programs and scholarships;
  • Year 7 – 12 students participate in the Coaching Young People for Success Program during Pastoral Care encouraging student participation in their career and life journey;
  • Information sessions are presented to students about Career Development Programs such as VET in Schools, School based Apprenticeships and Traineeships and Alternative Pathways Programs;
  • Careers Facebook page providing current information and trends including promotional photographs of students involved in School based Apprenticeships and Traineeships;
  • Students in the senior school are taught networking and research skills to assist in their own career investigation;
  • Assistance is provided with the Year 10 Senior Education and Training Plan to make appropriate subject choices relating to career interests and strengths. Ultimately keeping student’s options open to gain access to University, TAFE, Trade and job pathways;
  • Provide job hunting strategies and interview skills to assist students gain employment;
  • Guidance with resume and cover letter preparation;
  • Work Experience Program for students in Year 10, 11 and 12 during school holidays;
  • Defence Work Experience Program.

Students in all year levels (and their parents) are welcome to make appointments to talk with the Career Counsellor at St Anthony’s about their career plans.  Assistance is also provided to assist students problem solve to meet the needs of their learning and transition to work, further learning or training.
