Hydrogen Grand Prix

St. Anthony's will be taking part in Townsville's inaugural Hydrogen Grand Prix event in 2025!

The Hydrogen Grand Prix is an opportunity for students to construct, modify and race remote control cars which run on a hybrid hydrogen and battery energy system. The cars compete in a four hour long endurance race and to be successful, smooth driving and efficiently managing the car's energy resources is key.

Building on theory work from earlier in the term, students from year 9 STEM have been able to take our brand new hydrogen car to the SDC for testing and some much needed driver practice. As we discovered, driving the car smoothly and efficiently is not as easy as it looks, which is why we will be incorporating the Hydrogen Grand Prix into next year's STEM curriculum. There is also the possibility of starting a Hydrogen Grand Prix club after school next year to give students the opportunity to practise their skills and hopefully to dominate next year's competition. The team which wins in Townsville will have the opportunity to travel to the World Championships later in the year, so here's hoping we can get those driver skills dialled in!

St. Anthony's are also extremely grateful to renewable energy company Iberdrola for agreeing to sponsor our team. The Hydrogen Grand Prix cars represent a considerable expense and without sponsorship, we would not be able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. With Townsville set to become a major hub in the hydrogen industry, we are most excited to be able to partner with a leading renewable energy company.
