Bilingual Program

St Anthony's Bilingual Program was established in 2020 at St Anthony’s Catholic College. Students have the opportunity to complete their Primary school studying Australian Curriculum through two languages: English and Japanese from Year 1 to Year 6. The Bilingual Program offers a dual focused educational approach used for teaching both content and language. Drawing from the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) methodology which is used to teach subjects such as Science, Maths and Geography to students through a foreign language.

Why a Bilingual Program?

There are many benefits for students learning the Australian Curriculum through two languages. Extensive research proposes many benefits for the learner of a bilingual experience such as accessing subject-specific language terminology and preparing them for future studies or work life however for a deeper purpose in teaching through this approach would be the cognitive development; the ability to think in different languages, that can have positive impacts on content learning (Marsh, 20009 as cited in Coyle, Hood and Marsh, 2010).

Student who are in the Bilingual Program develop the following:

  • Problem solving
  • Creativity
  • Critical analysis
  • Teamwork
  • Independent thinking
  • Initiative
  • Communication
  • Inter cultural competence / sensitivity
  • Digital literacy
  • Resilience

What does a Bilingual Program Timetable look like?

  1. Students spend half the day in the Japanese program and the other half in the English program every day.
  2. They have two classroom teachers. (English program teacher and Japanese program teacher.)
  3. Students attend specialist subjects such as PE and Music in English.
